Crazy Idea: Have a Food Truck Wedding Reception

Food Truck at My Wedding

I know this is crazy, but I think it would be awesome to rent a food truck for your wedding reception.  You could even have two show up, one for the bride and her taste of food and one for the groom with his style of food.  This would be a fun thing, not a fancy thing.  So if you are having your wedding in a boutique hotel with a string quartet this is not your cup of tea.  But if you are having a country chic barn wedding or an urban warehouse wedding reception this would be perfect.  It would make your reception stand out.  You could also just rent a food truck for your rehearsal dinner or your midnight after party!  Think about it.

If you are crazy enough to be interested I stumbled across a cool website that actually makes it easy to locate, track, and rent your favorite food trucks.  Go check out http://roaminghunger.com/.  I just found out that there is a BBQ truck thats close to me today and I might just have to go check it out.

How can paper be so much fun?

I have recently admitted that I have an addiction to paper!  Something I have known for a while now but something I have yet to confess. Whether it be printing a photo on beautiful bamboo paper or creating an album on recycled paper with hand torn edges, I could sit, feel and talk paper for hours.  In a world where our mail boxes are filled with bills and ads, there is nothing more refreshing than receiving a beautiful invitation or note on a stunning press printed card stock.  On this ‘note’ I decided it would be fun to share a bit about some of my favorite papers and what some amazing designers are doing with it.

Doodle Dog Designs- a Dallas branding, stationery & marketing company that carries beautiful press printed, custom invitations, RSVP cards, thank you notes and so much more.  Not only are their products stunning, Nikki and team are a dream to work with.

Dallas Wedding Invitations

Southern Fried Paper- are you looking for that rustic, vintage feel?  Then look no further!  Chelsea and her southern creative charm will help you design the perfect look to set the pace for your event.

Atelier du Papier- looking to take your invitation or announcement to the next level?  Then I highly recommend you visit Sarah and team.  Every day they are stretching the limits to make dreams a reality.

How to give your wedding a personal touch

Getting Personal with Couture Events by Lottie

How to give your wedding a personal touch

My name is Lottie Fowler and I am the owner of Couture Events by Lottie. We are not only an event planning company but we also cater to those who are looking for an overall design and event theme. I must admit I am not much for trends but I do take bits and pieces here and there and use them for inspiration. My favorite part of working with my clients is drilling down to the details that ultimately end up creating the scheme for the day. I LOVE alternatives so I thought I would provide some great alternate examples for guestbook’s and the “send away” toss. Having alternatives on your wedding day gives your guests a “personal touch feeling” and leaves them gushing even after the wedding is over. It gives an opportunity for new moments and memories to be made and engages family and friends to actively become a part of the event. There is nothing more boring than attending a wedding where everything is ordinary and nothing seems personal or intimate in anyway. You end up leaving feeling like you know the couple no more than a wedding crasher would.  As a planner and designer, I hear this from many of my brides to be. They don’t have the time to dedicate to the details and their fear is that, they will just settle for ordinary. I don’t think we’d get calls if we were Ordinary Events by Lottie so in steps the Couture. Here are some ways to tailor your wedding to fit your personal wishes:

Guestbook Alternatives:

creative guestbook ideas

Instead of signing a matted photo, why not have a personalized and unique puzzle created like those from Bella Puzzles for guests to sign or write sweet wishes.

Instead of a wishing tree, try a post card or recipe station?

Are you known for being over the top in love with something in particular? Do you over-obsess about your record player and vinyl’s or does the groom-to-be have some mad Jenga or poker playing skills? Get approval first but incorporating items such as a deck of cards or an old record is a great way to add personality.

All girls love china. Check out one of our favorite guestbook alternatives from Martha Stewart Weddings. Choose white dishes for the well-wishes, which show up nicely when inscribed with metallic paint pens. Then later arrange them on a focal wall in your home for a beautiful touch.

Oh how we love Christmas weddings and a wonderful way to incorporate a unique guestbook by having guests sign or wish you well on ornaments. You will have many years of laughter and heartfelt memories each Christmas season to come.

Getting married on a beach? Have wishing stones signed and collect them in jars later for décor.

Are you a southern gal or guy? Have guests type a note to you on a super cool vintage typewriter or place a print on your thumbprint family tree.

“Send away” Toss Alternatives:  Unique Grand Exit Ideas

Nothing beats that first introduction as man and wife but the departure sure comes close. The night is over, your guests are happy, and you are both on your way to the hotel to… play some awesome Jenga. HA! I love thinking up creative ways to send the duo off into the night. Here are a few of our favorite grand exit ideas.

lavender grand exit ideas

Rice kills birds, and birdseed attracts too many. So… why not toss lavender buds?

Say no to sparklers, say yes to ribbon wands like those found on Etsy.

fun alternative to the grand exit

Out with the bubbles and petals and in with the eco-parti toss! Lovely and won’t harm mother earth.

Paper Airplane grand exit

Don’t want to worry about the cleanup of confetti? Then choose paper airplanes!  It’s fun and makes beautiful photos.

Since venues can be really particular about cleanup, you are usually always safe with choosing noisemakers like slappy hands or blow horns.

Shopping for the Perfect Wedding Dress

How to find the perfect wedding dress:

From wedding ball gowns to casual wedding gowns, shopping for wedding dresses is something you have been dreaming about since you could play dress up.  Now that you are engaged (congrats! I know you are excited!) you have the task of finding your dream wedding dress.

Shopping for the perfect wedding dress

I have teamed up with Kimberly from http://www.kimberlyschlegel.com to outline a few tips that should help you on your search.  She is a Dallas based blogger and author that offers great tips on everything from spring cleaning to party planning.  You can listen to her on 103.7 lite FM or read her Blog and buy her books here.  Here is her story on dress shopping:

My sister, Kari, is about to head out to her first bridal fitting after selecting her dress.  I am so honored that she asked me to come with her and I can’t wait to see her in the gown!  It got me thinking about what a big deal it is to select that one dress that you dream about for years and years!  For some, it is simple.  They have had a vision of what their gown will be like since they were in the second grade.  For others, that vision is not as clear and selecting just one can be terrifying!  It is an important decision and one that you will reflect on for years to come.

Here are my tips for choosing the perfect wedding gown:

- After you are engaged, start browsing through the bridal magazines and tearing out images of dresses that you like.  You might notice a pattern in the styles, designers, and cuts that you are pulling.

- Be sure to try on all of the different shapes and cuts that the professionals at the bridal boutiques suggest.  Even though you may think a trumpet style will not work on your body shape, the pros are experienced and their knowledge and ideas might surprise you!  Be open minded and make it fun!

-Gowns can take anywhere from four to ten months to deliver and you might need to leave time in there for fittings and alterations as well.  Be sure to shop early and explain your deadlines to your boutique sales team.

-Make an appointment.  Most Bridal Boutiques work by appointment only so set aside some time and book  an hour or so at a few different places.

- Set a budget before you shop!  Ask the shops for the price range of the dresses they sell when you call to make an appointment.

- Take your trusted tastemakers with you but believe in your own reactions too.  Invite your mom, sisters, bridesmaids, or friends to go with you when you first try things on but don’t let them talk you into something that just isn’t you.

-Take shoes that are similar to the heel height you plan on wearing on your big day.  They really do make a difference!  After you select your dress and purchase your wedding day shoes, take them with you to your fittings so that the length can be measured appropriately.

- Take photographs!  Ask your mom or bridesmaid to take photographs of you in the dresses that you are considering.  They will help you look back and remember the little details that made one dress stand out from the others.

- Don’t buy on your first visit.  Think about the dresses that are your top choices and sleep on it.  Go back and try them on a second time before you place your order.

- Keep the dress style appropriate to the time, season, style and location of your wedding.  A ball gown is not going to look right at the beach!

What To Wear For An Engagement Shoot?

One of the questions we receive the most is, “What Should I Wear?” Below are a few suggestions to help you achieve the perfect look for your photos.

What to wear? Do!

  • Bring at least two outfits: one casual, everyday outfit and one dressy outfit.

Casual… and dressy:

Fun Engagement outfit idea red jeans and denim

What to wear

* Wear solid colors. Clothing with bold stripes and colorful prints are often distracting. Choose one solid hue that complements your eye color.

* Avoid showing a ton of skin. Shirt with sleeves are generally more flattering.

* Bring a black top. A simple, dark top allows the focus of an image to be the persons face. An added bonus of dark clothes is that they tend to be slimming.

* Wear classic styles to prevent the photograph from looking outdated. A little black dress for women and a solid-colored suit for men will never go out of style.

* Ladies, consider a v-neck top. Turtlenecks, thick scarves and sweaters can add bulk to your appearance. V-necks and open collars elongate the neck and body and bring the focus to your face.

* Guys, consider a collared shirt. A collared shirt frames the face and can be very flattering.

The perfect match. A solid v-neck for her, a collared shirt for him:

An off white shirt is better than a bright white shirt

* Always choose sleek, fitted clothes over baggy.

* Keep your makeup and hairstyle simple.

* Feel free to coordinate your look and wear complementary colors with others in the photo, but don’t try to match them. (Good examples: black shirts, or everyone in different shades of blue or purple.)

Coordinated, but not matching:

* Clothes put people in context, so remember to dress for your locationand theme. If you’re after a fun vibe, wear things that pop (see next tip), if you want a more formal vibe, then go for a suit and dress.
Be yourself, be fun and comfortable!

* Don’t be afraid to wear things that ‘pop’ such as chunky jewelry, fun shoes, a brightly-colored blazer, a tie, sunglasses or dress hats.

Cowboy boots are a fun touch:

* Launder and iron your clothes to remove any wrinkles.

* Before your photo session, grab a digital camera and take a “test shot” of your outfit. Clothing often looks much different in a photo than it does in a mirror. A test shot is a surefire way of knowing you will love your outfit in your photos.

* Bring props! If you play an instrument, ride a bike or skateboard, have a favorite article of clothing or just a meaningful item, bring it with you. These personal items add an extra flair to your look.

What to wear? Dont!

* Don’t wear an outfit containing plaid, bold stripes, colorful prints or writing/large graphics; these will make you look too busy and take away from the subject of the photo.

* Don’t go for solid white button down shirts for the two of you.

* Ladies should pass on tube top styles, to avoid ending up with an ‘extra layer’ on top.

* Ladies, don’t forget a manicure for an engagement shoot. There will always be a close-up shot of the ring on your hand.

* Don’t have your hair cut the day of a portrait. Schedule hair appointments at least a week in advance for a more natural look.

* Don’t neglect finding shoes to compliment your outfit. They will likely be seen in most of your photos.

*  *

A First Glance: Why We Are For It!

A common question photographer’s ask their brides is “When will you first meet your groom?” The answers vary but typically the questions is returned, “What are your thoughts, when should we meet?” and most every photographer will respond with “Before the ceremony”. We, being practically newlyweds of only 4 years ourselves, really wish we would have met before the wedding, this is one thing we would change about our wedding.  Samantha’s sister on the other hand, took our advice and met her groom before the walk down the aisle and her story is very different. She wouldn’t change a thing! After much thought & research we decided to dedicate a post to this very topic: To Meet or Not to Meet Before the Ceremony?

Reason’s Why Jonathan & Samantha Think a “First Glance” is the Way to Go:

1) the groom is able to fully take in the beauty of the bride without time or emotions hindering

- when the bride is walking down the aisle there is a rush of emotions making it hard to recall the events, not to mention all your guests are standing & the groom does not even seen his bride until the very end.

2) the bride has her groom before the nerves kick in of “getting married”

3) makes things run so much smoother as everyone is not spending their day trying to keep the Bride & Groom seperated

4) it allows for more together time for yall & the wedding party

5) it allows the photographer to capture photos that otherwise could not be captured which makes for a very happy couple & a happy photographer

6) it allows everyone at the ceremony to proceed directly to the reception without an hour of photo interruptions

Here are what a few other professional photographer’s have to say about the topic:
